But as your practice evolves, you might wonder how to infuse it with deeper meaning or focus on specific qualities you wish to cultivate. This is where setting an intention comes in.

Meditating with intention isn’t about striving for a specific outcome, but rather about bringing a particular quality of heart or mind into your practice itself. It adds a layer of purpose and warmth, guiding your awareness gently.

What Exactly is a Meditation Intention?

Think of an intention as a guiding star for your meditation session, rather than a destination to reach. It’s a quality you choose to bring awareness to or embody during your practice. Examples include:

Patience

Kindness (towards yourself or others)

Gratitude

Openness or Curiosity

Letting Go

Clarity

Calm

Self-Compassion

Intention vs. Goal: An Important Distinction

It’s easy to confuse intentions with goals. A goal is typically future-focused and outcome-oriented (e.g., “I want to feel less anxious after I meditate”). An intention, however, is rooted in the present moment and focuses on the quality of your experience while you meditate (e.g., “May I meet my anxiety with kindness during this sit,” or “Today, I intend to practice patience with my busy mind”). The intention guides how you relate to whatever arises.

How to Set an Intention:

Settle In: Find your comfortable meditation posture. Take a few moments to arrive, noticing your breath and body.

Tune Inward: Gently ask yourself: “What quality would support me right now?” or “What do I wish to cultivate in this moment?” Perhaps something challenging has come up in your life, or maybe you simply want to foster a sense of peace.

Choose Your Word/Phrase: Let a word or short, gentle phrase arise. Keep it simple (e.g., “Patience,” “Kindness,” “Stay Open,” “Gratitude”).

State it Silently: Repeat your intention silently to yourself a few times with sincerity. Feel its resonance within you.

Let it Go & Begin: Release the intention and gently begin your core meditation practice (e.g., focusing on the breath). You don’t need to keep repeating the intention constantly; let it rest softly in the background, like a subtle fragrance in the room. If you get lost or caught up in difficulty, you might gently recall the intention to help guide you back.

Why Bother with Intentions?

Setting an intention can bring focus, connect you more deeply to your values, help you work consciously with specific challenges or patterns, and infuse your practice with warmth and purpose. It turns a potentially mechanical exercise into a heartfelt exploration.

Experiment with setting intentions in your meditation. Notice how it subtly shifts your experience. It’s a simple yet powerful way to bring more heart and purpose to the cushion.

Have you tried setting intentions in your meditation?
