Stressed? Overwhelmed? Sometimes, the simplest tools are the most powerful. Right now, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you have access to an incredible resource for calming your nervous system and grounding yourself: your breath.

Focusing on the breath is a cornerstone of many meditation and mindfulness practices for good reason. It’s always with you, it’s free, and it acts as a direct anchor to the present moment, pulling you away from anxious thoughts about the future or regrets about the past.

Ready to try a simple, effective breathing exercise you can do anywhere?

The 5-Minute Anchoring Breath

This exercise takes just five minutes and can significantly shift your state of mind.

Find Your Seat (or Stand): Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, or lie down, or even stand if that’s what’s available. Gently straighten your spine, allowing yourself to be upright but not stiff. Relax your shoulders.

Eyes Open or Closed: You can close your eyes gently, or if you prefer, keep them open with a soft, unfocused gaze towards the floor a few feet in front of you.

Bring Awareness to Your Breath: Simply notice that you are breathing. Don’t try to change your breath in any way – just observe its natural rhythm.

Choose Your Anchor Point: Pick one spot to rest your attention. This might be:

The sensation of air moving in and out of your nostrils.

The gentle rise and fall of your chest.

The expansion and contraction of your abdomen.

Choose whichever feels most noticeable or comfortable for you right now.

Rest Your Attention: For the next few minutes, keep your attention gently focused on your chosen anchor point. Feel the full duration of each inhale and each exhale.

Mind Wandering? It’s Okay! Your mind will wander. It will drift off to thoughts, sounds, or sensations. This is completely normal! When you notice your attention has strayed, gently acknowledge where it went (“ah, thinking,” “sound”) and then kindly, without judgment, guide it back to the sensation of your breath.

Continue: Repeat this process – resting your attention on the breath, noticing when it wanders, and gently guiding it back – for about 5 minutes. You can set a soft timer if you like.

Ending: When your time is up, slowly bring your awareness back to the room around you. Notice how you feel.

When to Use This:

First thing in the morning to set a calm tone.

During a stressful workday (step away from your desk for 5 minutes).

Before a difficult conversation.

When transitioning between tasks.

Anytime you feel overwhelmed or scattered.

Just five minutes of focused breathing can make a real difference. Try incorporating this simple practice into your day and see how it helps you feel more anchored and present.

Let us know – when could you use a 5-minute breathing break today?

Feeling scattered?
